Come visit Tongin Market near Gyeongbok Palace Station.
Take a lunch box and fill it with your favorite market food.
You can also purchase a Tong Yang market pot for only 500won at the lunch box cafe located on the second floor of the Customer Satisfaction Center in the middle of the market. Then you can use this market pot (aka lunch box) to buy the food you want to eat!
However the places selling food don’t take actual money! You must exchange your cash for old traditional Korean money and then use it to buy what you choose. One korean old coin is the equivalent to 500won.
Have fun recreating the old day’s atmosphere using actual old traditional Korean coins. It may seem like a small market but it is full of interesting things to see and experience. The “making my own lunch box” in the lunch box cafe is loved by the guests. It has a huge variety of menus and foods to choose from: tteokbokki, sundae, tempura, and kimbab, and other such as salted fish, special herbs, soups, and so on.
How to buy your food at the market
Walk around the market with your lunch box and buy whatever side dish you desire at a lunch box cafe merchant shop. One or two pieces of side dishes are exchanged for 1 or 2 pieces (old Korean coins). After shopping around the market head to the main cafe and eat rice and soup for 1,000 won eac along with the remaining items un your lunch box. The kimchi is on the house.
Meals (rice, soup, kimchi) prepared at the café are served from 11:00am to 4:00 pm (Monday to Saturday)
Lunch, coffee and drinks are available until 5pm.
